Nothing can put a damper on a 4th of July celebration faster than a trip to the emergency room. Each year hospitals around the country are flooded with over-zealous celebrators that get a little carried away with their festivities.
Last year ABC News reported that over 9,000 individuals were rushed to their local hospitals from firework burns alone. Yearly reports of causes for Emergency Room visits include severe burns from fireworks (as already mentioned), food poisoning from undercooked meat, and grilling related injuries.
Please exercise some common sense to keep your 4th of July pain free. Obey all state and local laws and regulations governing the usage of fireworks in your area. Even if your state allows you to discharge fireworks, that does not mean that you need to. There are tons of professional firework shows put on by local governments and other organizations; a simple Internet search will tell you the times and best vantage locations for fireworks shows in your area. If you simply can not live without setting off some fireworks this year, make sure you take all the necessary safety precautions before you do so.
To prevent grilling related trips to the ER, please make sure that all meats are cooked to their appropriate temperatures before being served, especially when they are being served to children who are more prone to getting seriously ill from ingesting undercooked meats. Use a thermometer to ensure that meats reach the proper internal temperature before letting your guests chow down.
Prevent grilling related burns by using the proper safety gear, such as an apron and gloves when handling the grill. Make sure that any kids in attendance know that it is unacceptable for them to horseplay/run near the grilling area. You should also have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher handy just in case something goes wrong.
Hopefully everyone will have a safe and wonderful 4th of July celebration!
