The Yankee’s legendary owner, George Steinbrenner, passed away this morning from a heart attack after being rushed to a hospital in Tampa, Florida. Mr. Steinbrenner was 80 years old.
This iconic man took ownership of the Yankees in 1973 and immediately started pouring his heart, soul, time, effort, and a significant amount of his millions into rebuilding the sports franchise to its former glory.
Since he has owned the most notable baseball franchise in the country, the team has earned 7 World Series Titles, and managed to take home 11 pennants.
Mr. Steinbrenner was known for his no-nonsense take on Yankee baseball, often berating players and managers for failing to live up to his standards of how a top-notch baseball team should perform.
One of his most notable achievements for the program, among countless others, was his ability to woo Reggie Jackson so effectively that the super star decided to come to New York to play for Steinbrenner’s team.
Perhaps the most notable owner in Yankee baseball history and certainly a name known well in New York, George Steinbrenner reluctantly handed over the reins to his baseball empire to his sons Hank and Hal Steinbrenner in 2006.
Mr. Steinbrenner is well known, maybe because of or at least in spite of, his controversial approach to running the Yankees program. He was famous for hiring, firing, and sometimes re-hiring managers for the program as well as his ethically questionable approach to running the team that at one point got him suspended from baseball altogether.
George Steinbrenner is survived by his 4 children Hank, Hal, Jessica, and Jennifer and his wife Elizabeth as well as his many business ventures.
