It is that time of year, when baseball contenders make trading moves with visions of playing in September and beyond. But for the life of me, I do not get the Jays’ trade of their top prospect, Brett Wallace to Houston for Anthony Gose.

Perhaps, it is a trade for the future, and the Jays were grabbing prospects available out there in the market. This then would make sense, because the Jays seem to be assembling quite a team for now and the future, and the prospects are young too.

The baseball logic of the trade is obvious, because Gose, is barely nineteen, can be a tremendous southpaw hitter. However, the Jays are not concentrating on his hitting, which incidentally Gose hasn’t done that well in the minors.

But the Jays are seeking a talent in center field and Gose is said to be one of the top prospects out there – and again, he is only nineteen - with the added gift for speed, having stolen 76 of 96 bases in the minors.

The Jays’ choice of readily giving up on their equally talented first base prospect Wallace was made because it is easy to procure a first baseman than a talented center fielder.

Currently, the Jays are twelve games behind the first place Yankees and Rays, and Boston are ahead of the Jays for the Wild Card spot. Knowing their standings, we can surmise that the trade of Wallace was a move for next year and the future.

As for Houston getting the talented Wallace, this too is a move for the future because Houston is second to last in the Central Division. Mr. Wallace is expected to get ample playing time in Houston, unlike his time in a Blue Jay uniform. The proverbial writing should be on the wall for the Jays current center fielder, Vernon Wells - Gose is being groomed for his position.
