I have always wondered how difficult it must be for those brave men and women, employed in the “Cloak and Dagger” business, who cannot make anyone privy to what it is that they do or even when they do an excellent job, only the few in their circle can laud them - we all also know that when things go bad, the whole world knows about it. All these pitfalls are part of the excellent action spy thriller, “Salt”, with the main character being played by the brilliant Angelina Jolie.
In the opening scene of “Salt,” we see Evelyn Salt, played by Jolie, in a North Korean prison being vigorously interrogated. Miss Salt endures all manner of torture, including water boarding, but maintains her resolve and denying that she is a CIA spy. Later on, we see the United States exchanging Salt for a North Korean operative. When Salt asked her handler, played by Live Schreiber, why they came for her – he said they didn’t, but that her boyfriend had so much “juice” and influence, that he forced the powers that be in Langley and Capitol Hill to force the exchange.
The plot involves a Russian spy, who walks into the CIA Head-quarters, saying that there is going to be an event, if successful, that will put both countries on a war footing. Salt, after recuperating and telling her husband what it is she does for a living, is back at her CIA job. The kicker is, Salt, who is debriefing this walk-in and would-be traitor, tells her that she was the planted spy assigned to carry out this momentous event that would put both Russia and America on the brink of war.
This plot is right out of the “Cold War” era when Russia was part of the Soviet Union and it mirrors the real life Russians spies that were exposed a few weeks ago – only that Salt’s plants mission is much more diabolical incidentally Salt’s plot is similar to the Kevin Costner 1987 movie, “No Way Out.” The action in Salt is fast pace and Miss Jolie more than succeeds in the role because she has that androgynous attitude: when she is fighting and firing her weapon, it is believable; and when she is in the marital surroundings, she is the typical loving domesticated wife. This bifurcated life is well played by Jolie, with the beautiful pouty lips actress deftly invoking the distinguished emotions needed for the respective settings.
Even if one took a chauvinistic attitude when viewing “Salt,” by the time the movie is over, he would have changed his mind because Miss Jolie is more than convincing in her role. Salt is a welcomed spy thriller with superior acting, providing all the attendant thrills and plot twists, which provide the hypertension. There is a pivotal scene, which takes place in a ship, where Miss Jolie must finally prove her loyalty - but to do so, she must make the ultimate personal sacrifice. It is heart wrenching, watching Jolie’s face as she makes the decision, invoking that noble posture like Spock in “The Wrath of Khan”, and deciding that the needs of many outweigh the needs of a few or the one.
Perhaps, it is because I have also seen Miss Jolie as Laura Croft in actions scenes, which rivaled those of any male action stars - that is why I dare say that Miss Jolie could even pull off playing James Bond – oops, I meant Jane Bond.

Conclusion: "Salt" is a must see movie. [rating: 5/5]
