It is almost unfair, but it seems that year after year, the Yankees are in the running for the baseball championship. I, personally enjoy this because I am a Yankee’s fan, but it kills my father. I have to listen to my father’s wining about the so called “purity” of the game and how the Yankees buys championship – I always say to him, who doesn’t? The Yankees are at it again – USA Today is reporting that, although the deal isn’t completed, the Yankees are in negotiation for the services of first baseman Lance Berkman.

USA Today says there is further proof that the Berkman trade is in the works because he was kept out of the Houston lineup Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks. Everyone is making moves: the Phillies shored up their pitching by acquiring Roy Oswalt; Miguel Tejada went to the Padres and the other teams like the Rays are looking to compete down the stretch – so why not the Yankees? To the Yankee haters like my father, what do you say about those years when the Marlins and the Rays went far into the playoffs and even reach the promise land without the Yankee payroll?

Even if the Yankees have the loot to lure good talent, it is not automatic that they are going to win the championship - were it the case, they would have more than twenty seven championships. In Boston, the Yankees are known as the “Evil Empire,” but they too have won two championships in the eras of the Yankee spending sprees. Mr. Berkman's stats so far this year: 245 batting average; 49 RBIs; and 13 home runs. If Mr. Berkman comes to the Yankees, he will be filling the designated hitter’s slot.
