PCWorld is reporting that Microsoft’s CEO Steve Balmer told analysts that his company will be competing in the ever growing crowded tablet space, to provide a windows based version tablet to that of Apple’s popular iPad.

Among those assisting Microsoft in its tablet endeavor are Hewlett Packard, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Toshiba. Balmer underscored how serious Microsoft is in manufacturing a tablet by telling analysts that no one is sleeping . He was surprised that its main rival, Apple, has sold over 3 million of its' iPads.

Balmer gave a little insight on his company’s tablet by revealing that Intel processors and Windows 7 will be part of the inner workings of the coming gadget, but he did not speak on the tablet’s name or its' cost.

The irony is that Microsoft, who first saw the potential for a tablet like book way back in 2003,  launched its' Windows XP Tablet Edition years ago, but apparently it didn’t take with the buying public.

Microsoft has had a terrible start in making inroads into the tablet space; case in point, it was only a few weeks ago that they pulled their “Courier” dual screen tablet.

Even when Microsoft thought that it would be at least tangentially linked to Hewlett Packard’s tablet, the latter cuts ties with the former by replacing its' Windows 7 with Palm’s OS. Hewlett Packard’s choice made good business sense because of its' recent purchased of Palm.
