The Los Angeles Times is reporting that once mighty power house show 'American Idol' is finding it difficult to recruit and maintain hosts. First, the obvious star of the show, Simon Cowell, made an exit to start his own venture, and now Ellen Ellen Degeneres, who joined with such fanfare, is leaving.
From the beginning, it seemed a bad fit with the enthusiasm and seamless fit incompatible and off-kilter. Could it be that Paula Abdul was more integral to the team than first recognized? Just once, I would like stars to come out and say it didn’t work out, instead of resorting to the typical PR blather.
In the case of Ellen, we are told that she has "other commitments", and that she did not enjoy breaking would-be Idol hearts in telling them that they were not moving on, etc.
Let’s be honest, if there were no criticism of Ellen’s choice as the replacement of Abdul, does anyone think that Mrs. Degeneres would be leaving? The same commitments were there last year when she came on to the show with much fanfare.
Paula Abdul must be secretly smiling… getting the last laugh, and moreover, being rewarded with her own gig, with the added bonus of being one of her shows' producers.
What many do not want to acknowledge is how much a formidable competitor that “Dancing With The Stars” has become; it literally has more buzz. Especially when it showcases stars trying to maneuver around the dance floor – sometimes in sheer horror ala Kate Gosselin’s tenure on the show.
But that is what is appealing about Dancing With The Stars, even for macho guys like myself. I want to see my former or current football stars burning up the dance floor - and there is always the added drama of who is and will be hooking up. Tell the truth, how many of us wait with baited breath to know who are going to be chosen for Dancing With The Stars?
Earlier in the week, the Internet was abuzz about the producers of Idol courting Justin Timberlake and Sir Elton John – we were told that Timberlake was not interested, and that Sir Elton would cost too much. As recently as yesterday, P. Diddy let known his wish and desire to be part of the judges on American Idol.
I think the producers should give the winner of Idol a million dollars, because many of them seldom live up to the hype, at least by their album sales. Any show that could afford to pay Cowell some reported $50 million can take care of the winners financially, just in case the recording thing doesn’t work out.
