For the North Korean diplomacy, military maneuvers of the United States and South Korea are a "danger to the region." This condemnation of Pyongyang comes three days before the start of the joint naval exercises in the Sea of Japan.
It is expected that around 20 ships and submarines and 100 aircrafts will take part in the maneuvers. Ri Tong IL, a spokesman for the North Korean delegation says that “Such a move presents a grave threat to the peace and security not only to the Korean Peninsula but to the region” reported Yonhap. Ri however said that they are prepared to negotiate: "If they ask us to meet, we would. But they haven't yet made the proposal.”
The US and South Korea are blaming the North for the sinking of a South Korean warship in early March. So far North Korea has rejected all the accusations that have been put forward by a multination investigation team.
Earlier this week, ASEAN still hoped to ease tensions between the two Koreas. Its General Secretary even mentioned a possible resumption of talks on the North Korean nuclear. That was before the announcement of Hillary Clinton on new sanctions against North Korea. This will target luxury goods and the sale and import of arms.
China has also expressed concern about these military maneuvers in the region reported the BBC. The Chinese government has objected to any military drills in the Yellow sea which is found on the west of Korea.
Tomorrow, July 23, at the Forum on security in Asia, the U.S. and the two Koreas will be seated at the table, this has not happened since last year. The 27 members of this organization shall deliver a joint statement that will address the Korean crisis.
