With the release of iPad came bunch of luminous gaming apps, Need for Speed Shift for iPad being the most celebrate one. The street racing game offers graphically enriched closed circuits without worrying gamers about the police or any other authority. Electronic Arts did a fabulous job to integrate aesthetics with intuitive controls to provide quality gaming experience.

Features

The first and foremost thing to notice about NFS Shift is its stunning visuals. We all know EA for its highly graphical editions of games, be it the gaming consoles or Apple’s iPhone/iPod Touch, Electronic Arts truly revolutionized the gaming industry. This same company doesn’t fail to impress us when it comes to the iPad version of NFS Shift.

The iPad version offers London, Chicago and Tokyo as the primary locations. The developers of the game have tried to bring forth some of the well known buildings of these cities and there is no question about the visual details. These 3 locations offer well-defined 18 tracks, night ones being the most popular.

Now that it is established that NFS Shift has all the great looks for which EA is famous all across, let’s see how other departments are treated. The game includes some of the fantastic collection of cars on earth – 28 in total. You seriously have to think before customizing your car about your preferences. With each win cash pours into your account. The more you establish yourself the more chances appear to purchase nitro, tires and other accessories – new cars are also available for the serious shoppers.

NFS Shift takes care of the beginners by providing some very efficient tutorials. The tutorials are designed to let you know how much more practices is required before indulging in the real drama of races.

Gameplay

Need for Speed Shift offer three modes of play. Quick Play suits those who can’t wait any longer to get along with endless races. The Career Mode is for serious players who are really looking forward to establish their career in the profile. The records of balance and modifications will be kept in this mode – your new cars will appear here. The local multi-player mode works fine via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Sorry gamers no online multiplayer is possible in this version – a very demanding feature though.

Like the three modes of play NFS Shift offer three difficulty levels. If you perform well in the tutorial chances are that you will soon get bored with the beginner level difficulty.

One of the well known features of every modern racing game is drifting. The feeling of drifting a car without being in any personal and financial danger is truly an achievement by the gaming developers. NFS Shift is a slight disappointment when it comes to drifting but fills the void by providing excellent smoothness of driving and aggressive blocking.

Controls

Look does matter but the deciding factor of any racing game is how easy it is to control the cars. Those who have played racing games on iPhone/iPod Touch will be pleasantly surprised to find the similarity between the controls.

You can control the steering via tilting the screen right or left accordingly. Tilting feels so intuitive while playing the racing games and EA deserve 5 out 5 for providing such an intuitive controlling mechanism. Acceleration increases gradually and if you avoid being hit by any vehicle, chances are you will earn a good speed in no time. If you happened to choose the Expert control then controlling the acceleration, gears and applying the brakes become your responsibility. Although it is advised to get used to of the game using automatic controls initially but the real fun lies in managing each and every available option.

Braking is so spontaneous if you just hold on the screen after taping it. Customization is available for the controls and with the gradual passage of time you will learn where to change the values to have the best out of the game.

Some controls are not that much intuitive, consider the case of pausing the whole game, a swipe down using two fingers is required. A button is available on the top right corner so that you may change the camera view instantly. The dashboard view is probably the most well designed piece in this game – stunning views of the actual happening. Cracks that appear on the windscreen after a major collapse blur the line between computer and the real world – thumbs up for the graphical team.

Price

Without offering any options to be online and indulge in multi-player, $12.99 is a bit higher sum. But if you really want to show the potentials of iPad to your friends then the graphics team of EA has done a tremendous job for you.

Verdict

High details of visuals may attract the naive users but online multi-player option is a must if EA wants to stay in the lead. That said, Need For Speed Shift is as close you can get to the real racing without driving a real car. You can get Need for Speed Shift for iPad here.
