The NY Times is reporting, that GM is doing all it can to entice those who believe in alternative ways of commuting and energy, by warranting that the Volt battery, used in its electrical cars, is ensured for up to eight years or the first 100000 miles – now that is what we can call an objective incentive.
GM’s offer to ensure its battery, which will propel its electrical car, the Chevy’s Volt, is a way of showing the buying public its convictions, mixing an important topical issue with good business. It is true that because GM’s coming Volt will cost some $30,000.00, but GM is trying to entice the “green” consumers to purchase the Volt by offering the long battery warranty. It must be noted that GM only offers a five-year warranty, in tandem with the 100000 miles for its conventional cars.
Tony Disalle, marketing director for GM, is promising that the warranty will cover 161 of the Volt’s battery components, including drive components and the battery’s liquid thermal management system. GM is focusing on the battery because it knows that the public is privy to how temperamental Lithium batteries can be – we only have to look at those that power our lap tops and cell phones. GM is also keeping an eye on the competition like Telsa and Nissan who are about to launch their respective electrical cars, only that those two competitors have no battery warranties to match that of GM’s.
The GM plant which will manufacture the Volt battery is located in Holland, Michigan, and President Obama will be visiting the site when GM breaks ground. The battery company, Compact Power, is a subsidiary of the South Korean battery maker, LG Chem; it is expected that some 300 employees are needed to make the Volt battery.
For those who are advocates of “green” investing, GM is vying for your attention, not only to purchase its Volt, but its stock too. Does anyone remember that this is the same GM that was on the cusp of going out of business?
