The behemoth software company is now 35 years old, and while its founder is retired and off engaging in philanthropic endeavors, Microsoft still wants the public to know that it has not lost its luster. It is true that Apple and Google now get all the “shine” and glory, but Microsoft is planning its comeback and placing a sizeable bet on “Cloud Computing.”
Cloud Computing, according to Wikipedia, is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand, like the electricity grid.
According to Channelinsider, Steve Balmer, the current CEO of Microsoft, laid out his company’s future strategy to techies and potential investors alike a few days ago.
We all know that Microsoft has been taking its lumps, and as recently a week or so ago it pulled its smart phone after placing it in the stream of commerce, due to lack of interest and sales.
Balmer is not harping on yesterday bad tidings, but looking forward. Microsoft is boasting about it’s half million online seat of applications and its features to link its said applications to social networking sites in a way never seen before.
Balmer also boasts about Microsoft’s tablet computers, geared to compete with Apple’s iPads. In addition, Microsoft is said to be working on Windows slates, which will run Windows 7, Windows Office, and will accept ink and touch-base input.
Analysts are projecting a 19% growth in new software spending in 2013-14, and that Cloud Computing will grow some five times more than all other application spending.
Microsoft is positioning itself to be in the forefront of this new advent and presumably lucrative niche. Cloud Computing is just one the new ventures Microsoft is engaged in, and CEO Balmer hopes these endeavors will give Microsoft back its swagger, which have been usurped by Apple and Google.
