The emancipation is not up there with Moses’ freeing of the Jews or Lincoln’s Proclamation, but techies everywhere are rejoicing that they are free to run so called unauthorized application programs on their smart phones – a practice known as “jail-breaking.” .
The gist of the now resolved conflict was that smart phone manufacturers, like Apple, prevented consumers from using their smart phones to utilize other applications during its initial purchase, which did not come ready made with the phone . Te manufacturers deemed such usage of other apps a violation of their copyright laws.
The emancipator for the techies in this dispute was no other than the head of the Library of Congress who petitioned the United States Copyright Office to allowed the usage of applications independent of the manufacturers of the various smart phones, SFGate reports.
One of the notable plaintiffs, Apple, which have sold 60 million phones along with their attendant 225,000 approved applications, said that it was simply trying to protect its' customers from these third party apps that might contain harmful technical problems, or preventing inappropriate material such as pornography.
The revision of Copyright law, which takes place every three years, decided that “jail-breaking” does not infringe on the smart phone manufacturers rights. James H Billington, the Librarian of Congress, said that “jail-breaking” was like adding a printer driver application to a computer’s operating system.
Although, I am not far from being a Luddite, I am for anything that might make our lives a little bit more convenience… akin to years ago when a young Steve Jobs and his partner decided that they could make life easier by bringing to fruition the advent of the Mac computer and its many derivatives.
I am also certain that some smart kid will come up with an app and the manufacturers of the smart phones will claim that it is a derivative, but until that day, I will enjoy whatever convenience these newly freed jail-breakers can give us.
