CNN reports that 33 miners that had been trapped under the ground in a mine in Northern Chile, have been found alive and well after over two weeks. It already seemed hopeless, but the rescue team continued to drill and finally hit the underground shelter where the 33 miners have been sitting since over 17 days.

So far only a small shaft could be drilled to the shelter, which has the size of a small appartment. Through that shat the crew sent up written messages stating that they were all alive and well. Not water and food will be send down to the hungry miners. It will still take some time until they can be brought up.

In order to bring the men up, a shaft about of 26 inches diameter has to be drilled, which can take up to 120 days. But now at least the men can communicate with their families and they can get fresh water and food.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said: "Now we know the most important thing. They are alive". The shelter where the miners are is about 2,300 feet under the ground. Pinera was very happy when he held up the written message from the trapped crew. The message was written in large capital letters and said "ESTAMOS BIEN EN EL REFUGIO LOS 33 (All 33 of us are well inside the shelter)".

The mine produces copper and gold, is located in the Atacama region in northern Chile.
