Officials in Mexico stated that the alleged drug trafficker Edgar Valdez Villarreal, nicknamed "La Barbie" has been captured.

Edgar Valdez Villarreal was born August on 11, 1973 in Laredo, Texas. During his time in high school he excelled at football, but soon got bored with that and started to sell Marijuana on the streets of Laredo. He came from an upper middle class family.

Then he worked for the Mexican drug cartel Beltrán-Leyva as an officer. The Beltrán-Leyva Cartel is an organized crime syndicate that was founded by the five Beltrán Leyva brothers: Marcos Arturo, Mario Alberto, Carlos, Alfredo and Héctor. The drug cartel transports and whole-sells cocaine. They also produce marijuana and heroin and control many drug trafficking routes. Aside from that they smuggle humans, launder money, get money through extortion and kidnapping and if somebody does not follow orders or stands in their way they are killed.

The Mexican President Felipe Calderon is currently working on getting rid of drugs and drug related crimes in Mexico. As a result, many drug gangs are scared and are killing each other. So far the efforts were very successful: LA Barbie is the third major drug suspect that had been captured this year.

Valdez is also wanted in the U.S. A reward of $2 million was offered by U.S. authorities for information leading to the capture of the alleged drug dealer. So far the Mexican authorities have not announced anything regarding a possible extra diction of Valdez.

With the capture of Valdez, the Mexican Beltran Leyva cartel starts to fall apart. As LA Barbie was captured alive, officials hope to get a lot more information on the current drug scene in Mexico and the U.S. and hope to make it easier to clean it up.
