There are rumors that Apple iTunes may start offering TV show rentals for $0.99. This would enable users to watch have an episode of their favorite TV show for 48 hours. It would be $1 cheaper than buying an episode for $1.99.
The price for purchasing TV shows is just high enough to annoy people who are used to getting TV for free, but low enough that people pay it to watch their shows.
However, most people only watch episodes once and then move on to the next one. That means that it would be cheaper for them to just rent it for $0.99 than buying it for $1.99.
If iTunes begins offering TV shows for rent, they may very well gain more viewers for the TV shows that they offer in their store.
Amazon and Netflix are among Apple's top competitors in online TV. Netflix allows subscribers to stream some TV shows on computers or onto their TVs with the help of a set-top device such as the Roku or Xbox.
There are many TV shows available through Netflix, but they're usually not available until well after they're aired.
Amazon allows users to purchase and rent movies and also to purchase TV shows, but it does not currently allow users to rent TV shows.

If iTunes gets the function to rent TV shows, they will be far ahead in the market as their TV shows are available within 24 hours of the airing.
This ability to rent TV shows will, if it comes out, be available on Apple TV as well. This would allow users to have a sort of movies on demand experience with TV shows as well as movies.
There are other options to watching TV shows such as streaming sites like Hulu, however, these sites have commercials - that is the price of them being free. The iTunes TV rentals would be commercial-free.
If this new feature gets released, it will be in September, as according to CNN, Apple on Wednesday afternoon sent out an invitation to the news media for an event in San Francisco, California, on September 1. The invite did not specify the subject of the event.
