This coming week is the fifth “anniversary” of the costliest Hurricane in American History. It first struck South Florida, then it nearly destroyed New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina formed on August 23rd 2005, it dissipated on August 30th 2005. Hurricane Katrina will be remembered for a long time as one of the most devastating hurricanes in recent history.
Over 1,800 lives were lost. This makes it the deadliest storm to strike the U.S. Since the famous 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. $81 billion in damage was recorded from the storm across much of the Gulf Coast as well as the Bahamas. This number was almost three times as much as Hurricane Andrew caused back in 1992 when it struck in Miami, Florida.
Meteorologists, as well as engineers warned that New Orleans was at a great risk should a major hurricane strike the area. They warned this years beforehand, however, no-one listened. They all though that they would be safe. However, when Katrina hit, it caused their levies to be destroyed. Because the actual city was well below sea level it flooded. Water rose multiple stories, it drowned hundreds of people in its wake.
The damage from this hurricane was catastrophic, however, there is much that happened that isn't all bad. For one thing, when Katrina hit, the whole nation came together to help. You could see people in all states raising money to help support families involved in the disaster, or you could see people volunteering to rescue people from the floods.
In times like those, you really see the side of people that helps without thinking of themselves. You really see what the American nation is here for, to protect its citizens: their lives and their freedoms.
As the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina comes nearer, keep in mind those ideas and maybe you will help someone without even knowing it.
