Peggle, the worldwide success story from developer Pop Cap with over 50 million versions downloaded, has come to the iPod Touch and iPhone, bringing with it all the charm, class. and addictive gameplay of the PC and console versions.
The concept is deceptively simple: the screen is filled with blue and orange ‘pegs’, and your job is to fire balls at them to light them up, bouncing the ball between them to hit multiple pegs. Hitting all the orange pegs clears the stage, and moves you onto the next one.
But delve deeper into the game and you will discover so much more. Magic powers, each belonging to one of ten unique playable characters, can change the outcome of your shots drastically. By hitting a green peg you activate these powers, which could spawn a huge pyramid at the bottom of the screen, or pinball flippers to keep your ball in play, all depending on the character you choose.
Along the bottom of the play area runs a ‘Ball Bucket’, which awards you with a free ball should you manage to land yours in it. With millions of possible peg combinations you will never run out of new levels to attempt, and with a variety of game modes including a full adventure mode, multiple challenges with specific tasks to complete, and a multiplayer mode for you and your friends, the Peggle fun never stops.
When you first start up the app you are greeted by a friendly unicorn named Bjorn, the leader of the ‘Peggle Institute’, who provides you with a series of tutorial levels to play through. This allows you to naturally get used to how the game works, and really helps to gently ease you into the Peggle world.
The game looks wonderful, with each level having its own theme and unique background. Movement is smooth, with the ball traveling around the screen flawlessly, lighting up the pegs as it goes. The sound quality is great too, with various ‘pops’, ‘pings’ and ‘pongs’ playing as balls bounce, and pegs illuminate. At the end of each level, if you complete it, ‘Ode to Joy’ blasts out of your speakers, accompanied by fireworks and lights galore. Little quirks like this really make the game shine.
Peggle is a joy to behold. It oozes charm, with its' colourful array of characters, ranging from the aforementioned unicorn Bjorn, to a French lobster and a psychic owl (seriously, who comes up with this stuff!?), and fantastic sound and visuals all coming together to form a delightful package. With intuitive controls enabling a seamless transfer from the TV screen to the small, portable iPod and iPhone, you won't want to miss out. Pick up a copy today, and let the magical world of Peggle suck you in.
