Nobody in their right mind can doubt that the Germans know a thing or two about designing and making cars, and from what I saw adorning the pages of the New York Times, BMW’s electric car design kicks butt.
Yes, I know it was only a design, but given the Germans pedigree in making cars, I am almost certain that the BMW electric car will live up to its' looks.
Too many times, the rhetoric and hype surrounding building electrical cars - or anything that gives “props” to green technology - turns out to be impractical. Or is just not cost effective for the typical consumer.
Earlier this week, we saw the IPO for Tesla Motors, a car company in the early stages of building an electrical car; and now, BMW has released its' design for its' own.
BMW, in 2007, took on the task of designing and mass producing an electrical car; the endeavor was known as project I. This week, the New York Times is reporting that BMW will be mass producing its' electric car by 2013.
To facilitate the building of BMW’s electrical car, the New York Times, along with other reporters, were treated to a two-day demonstration in Munich, Germany. BMW demonstrated the viability of battery power, and also that electricity was a viable replacement for gasoline.
BMW went further, by crash testing the prototype chassis and frame of its' electric car. Later this month, it will break ground on a factory in Moses Lake, Washington, to produce the carbon fiber needed for the passenger compartment.
This is what President Obama often opines about: “green” technology providing employment and helping the environmental at the same time.
The only disappointment I had in reading about BMW’s electric car was the fact that BMW did not say how much this car will cost… perhaps, this is so because the mass production of these electrical cars will see the light in 2013.
