The Apple store is renowned for its wealth of minigames. ‘Shallow’ might be the word that springs to mind when such games are mentioned, but in the Iphone world, that is no bad thing. The sole purpose of many games on the App store is to waste a few minutes of your day here and there, be it over a lunch break, the daily commute, whatever small amount of free time you get during the day. Fruit Ninja is a shining example of how games like these can really, really work.
The game consists of one basic task: frantically slice, slash and stab at fruit that soars across the screen, while avoiding cutting flying bombs. Developer Halfbrick Studios has done a great job with the visuals. The fruit is presented in a beautifully cel-shaded, 3D style, with bright colours giving the game a sense of cuteness and charm. Watermelons, kiwis, oranges, pears, coconuts and more arc across the screen, spewing their insides across the walls when they meet your deadly sharp ninja sword (or finger, for the unimaginative!). The sound quality is excellent too – the soft swishing of your sword is accompanied by comical splats as fruit is severed in two.
There are various game modes, the first being a ‘Classic Mode’, where you have three lives to play with. You lose one life each time you miss a piece of fruit and let it fall off screen, but if you hit a bomb your game is over instantly. You can increase your score by slicing multiple pieces of fruit in one swipe, awarding you with double the amount of points. Other modes include a ‘Zen Mode’, where bombs and lives are removed and instead you have 90 seconds to annihilate as much fruit as you can, and a mysterious ‘Coming Soon’ option, which will no doubt be replaced with a new mode in an update in the near future.
Another feature is the ‘Dojo’, containing a ‘Swag’section, where by completing certain tasks within the game modes you can unlock new colours and styles for your sword, and different backgrounds for when you are playing. This adds a nice bit of variety to the game by allowing you to customise your ninja experience.
Fruit Ninja’s game play is frantic and addictive, with its gorgeous visuals keeping you coming back for more time after time. Open feint support allows access to achievements, leaderboards and more, providing an endless challenge for the high score addicts out there. For the bargain price of £0.59 ($0.99), there really is no reason not to get your copy of Fruit Ninja right away. [rating: 4/5] Get slicing!
