It was not exactly 'The Hunt for Red October', or its' discovery and capture; nonetheless, this story is a testament to how sophisticated the drug cartels are evolving in figuring out ways to ferry their drugs from the jungles to the rest of the world.
The Telegraph reported that a submarine was discovered and captured in a tributary near the Ecuadorean and Colombian border.
It is not that the discovered narcotics sub had the amenities of our Aegis class, but the fact it was not on its' maiden voyage tells us what the DEA is up against.
The specs of the sub include: a sophisticated camouflaged vessel; a conning tower; periscope; and an air-conditioning system.
In addition, the sub measured about nine feet high from the deck plates to the ceiling and stretched nearly a 100 feet long. The DEA concludes that the sub was built for transoceanic drug trafficking and was on its' way to deliver its payload.
One person was arrested and taken into custody by the Ecuadorean authorities.
In light of the fact that the subs are becoming a norm in trafficking drugs, let us extrapolate and see what the DEA might be facing in the future.
Do we think that the drug cartel have the means to commission scientists and the like to built more sophisticated submarines? If the cartel now employs some of the most gifted chemists, is it such a stretch to surmise that soon the conveyances to deliver the narcotics will mirror what is built for our defenses?
We may never see subs of the like to rival those of the Super Powers in the hands of the cartels, but we already know that sophisticated weapons used by our military have been found in the hands of the cartel enforcers.
With all that cash generated by illicit drugs, they are providing the means to purchase whatever is out there: it could be chemists, weapons, lawyers, governments, and the wherewithal to build personally owned submarines to deliver the narcotics.
