[/caption]It is not unusual for Google to change the image that spells out "Google" on their main page. The logo is constantly being re-designed to mark a holiday, or to pay triubute to someone or something.
This 4th of July, Internet surfers in the United States awoke to find an interesting logo festively decorated with all the typical July 4th paraphenalia.
A closer look and a mouse scrowl over the design shows that it moves, creating an animation of a Rube Goldberg Machine. The text describing the logo says "Happy 4th of July and Happy Birthday Rube Goldberg!"
For anyone who is unfamiliar with Rube Goldberg's life work, he was an incredibly popular American Cartoonist who also dabbled in sculpting, writing, and inventing.
His best known work was a series of cartoons depicting a series of machines working together to complete simple tasks, one after another, in an interconnected manner. One after another, each machine does its' job to start the next machine at work. The basic idea is to create one, very large and incredibly complex machine that can perform a simple task.
The phrase "Rube Goldberg Machine" has come to not only identify these fun - but unnecessary - contraptions, but also has become a popular American phrase that describes any kind of over-thought out and over-worked idea, process, or design that could be easily completed in another manner.
Rube Goldberg has become a popular American icon after recieving several recognitions for his life's work, including a Pulitzer Prize and the Banshees' Silver Lady Award.
Google chose well when they decided to mash-up July 4th images with a machine that would do Goldberg proud. These two very American icons make for the perfect image to celebrate this amazing holiday.
July 4th celebrators relived a small, but notable, piece of American history as they celebrated with their friends and family yesterday.
