I am feeling ambivalent about the big deal we are making about LeBron James’ choice of teams, which are bidding for his services. The fact that LeBron is holding an hour long program on ESPN to let the country know his choice is too much.
Ok, so my feelings are tempered because the revenues generated during this hour-long program on ESPN will be going to charity – it’s the least LeBron can do.
What happen to simply staying at home like everyone else, and telling the basketball world which team you’ll be signing with?
As to whom LeBron should sign with – I say he should stay in Cleveland.
Now, my brother and youngest sister will be mad at me for saying so, but loyalty is important to me. Mr. James is a product of Cleveland; he has established ties there, filial and otherwise. The billion he can make in New York is also available in Cleveland.
Why go to Chicago when LeBron will have to compete with the legend Michael Jordan, who has garnered so many championships? Does LeBron wants to compete with Michael, and if he does, are the pieces there to take him to the promise land, notwithstanding today’s signing of Carlos Boozer?
The same situation is in New Jersey and New York – who will be LeBron’s Scottie Pippen or Dennis Rodman?
Think of the accolades that will come LeBron’s way were he to stay in Cleveland. It is said that LeBron’s signing means a billion dollars to the business communities; it is already being reported that were LeBron to leave, it will be economically devastating to the businesses around the Cavaliers playing facilities.
When you hear and see that the likes of President Obama and New York’s Mayor Bloomberg are openly vying for LeBron’s services for their respective cities (Chicago and New York), then you know his economic worth to the city.
Even if LeBron never wins a championship, Cleveland would still love their native son. Let us supposed that LeBron goes elsewhere, and ends up not winning a championship like Ewing, Barkley, Malone, and Stockston...then what?
Stay in Cleveland LeBron; loyalty has its' place.
