Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the political crisis between the United States and Cuba over the small, 6-year-old Cuban boy, Elian Gonzalez.

The international custody battle that made headlines across the nation 10 years ago has been all but forgotten, except by those that were involved.

A decade after this event occurred, Elian has emerged as a young man, and has several things to say about the event that received so much media attention around the world.

The young Elian, now 16 years old, wanted to express to everyone that he is not bitter about the situation that caused him to be such a politically charged topic of conversation over a decade ago.

Elian made his feelings on the subject known as he attended a celebration in his honor on Wednesday, alongside current Cuban President, Raul Castro. He said that he loves the country that was and is his home and is very happy that he ended up where he belonged.

Elian is currently on track to have a future as an officer of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Cuban military.

In case you are unfamiliar with the original event here is what occurred:

After Elian survived the trip that smuggled him from Cuba to the United States, Elian’s family in the U.S. and other Cuban exiles publicized their struggle against the boy’s father, who was still living in Cuba at the time, to keep Elian in the country.

Finally, after a lengthy court battle, the United States Immigration Service ruled that the child should be returned to live with his father in Cuba.

This entire scandal came to a head when U.S. agents removed Elian from his relatives’ home in Florida at gunpoint, so that he could be transported back to Cuba.
