According to The Herald Deputy Prime Minister Scotland calls the international community’s response to the destructive floods in Pakistan “lamentable”. Deputy PM Nick Clegg said that the aid and support provided by international governments and communities have been “absolutely pitiful”.
The worst flood in the history of South Asian country left more than 20 million people homeless. Pakistan’s total population is about 160 million, so almost 12% of the country’s population got affected by the deadly flood.
You can help too. State Department’s Bureau of International Information Programs writes:
Working with mGive, Americans are contributing to Pakistan flood relief by texting the word “SWAT” to 50555. The text results in a donation of $10 to the UNHCR Pakistan Flood Relief Effort. Every $10 helps provide tents and emergency aid to displaced families.
The flood and heavy rains killed 1600 people in Pakistan. Aid agencies and United Nations are concerned that post-flood diseases such as cholera will devastate the nation unless more international aid is approaching.
Britain has been on the top of donors’ list by providing about 25% of the aid which has already been received by Pakistan. The US has also done its bit by sending aid and helicopters to help the flood survivals; however, many other rich countries have failed to show any sympathy or support for the Pakistan flood victims.
According to the UN estimates, Pakistan needs more than £300 million or $470 million to somewhat recover from the floods. Charities announced Monday that Britons have so far donated £15 million or $23.5 million to help the flood-victims-aid effort. International aid helped more than 600,000 flood survivors to get emergency health care, food, clean water or shelter.
However, the situation on ground is getting worse day by day. The weather forecast shows more rains and floods in the coming weeks. Many dams have been broken already and the floodwaters are spreading all over the country, destroying hundreds of villages and towns. Swat Valley has already reported cholera cases.
More than six million children in Pakistan face the risk of life-threatening diseases after the flood. The UN is concerned that diseases like diarrhea, pneumonia and cholera will soon spread among the underage flood survivals. Situation can get even worse as dead bodies of animals are either floating in the floodwaters or lying on the ground near the flood survivals camps. Many children can die of malnutrition.
About 45,000 women amongst the flood survivals are due to give birth to their babies in August or September. Most of the new-born babies and mothers will die if clean water, food and health care facilities are not provided in time.
