I am currently writing my blogs from a Dell Studio lap top; this is what Dell is mainly known for: computers. But like Motorola, Dell cannot allow the lucrative space of smart phone to be dominated by Apple and so the Texas company has thrown its smart phone in the proverbial ring. Dell’s contribution to the smart phone arena is known as the “Streak” and it is scheduled for the consumer to purchase on online August 12 and available on August 13th for general purchase. PCWorld is reporting that there are some more details about the Streak, which is already available in England. The Streak will be a 5 inches tablet, costs $300.00, and comes with an AT&T two year contract.
There are those who were worried because Dell’s Streak was supposed to debut way back in July, but delays kept it from doing so. In the mean time, Droid X has made inroads and garnering some of the shine and glory, making a formidable challenge to Apple’s domination in the smart phone space so far. The Streak already has its critics; among their claims are: there's a question of whether it is really more of an Android smartphone, because its 5-inch screen is nearly half the screen size of the fast-selling Apple iPad and the $300.00 price tag is said to be too much.
After August, we all will be assessing how much of an impact Dell’s Streak has made and if the Droid X and Apple’s iPhone have to worry about the new guy. I will venture to say that if the Streak is modestly successful for Dell, it might be a formidable competitor if Dell can mass produce its smart phone like it does with PCs and lap tops. I will also say that the Streak’s price is not something that should have the consumer concern, if anyone can cut prices, its Dell. I do not know if the market can handle all these smart phones, especially those to come. What are the margins going to look like for the rest of the smart phone manufacturers, except Apple?
