Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The Ramadan is the holiest of months in the Islamic calendar and the month in which the Qur'an was revealed. The Qur'an is the central religious text of Islam, also sometimes transliterated as Quran, Koran, Qur'ān, or Al-Qur'ān.

During the month of Ramadan Muslims are fasting during the day between dawn to sunset. Muslims believe that the Qur'an was sent down to the lowest heaven during this month thus being prepared for gradual revelation by angel Gibril (Gabriel) to the Prophet Muhammad. The Ramadan starts with a celebration. At the end of Ramadan, Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims.

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and months begin when the first crescent of a new moon is sighted. Since the Islamic lunar calendar year is 11 to 12 days shorter than the solar year and contains no insertion of a leap day, week or month, the Ramadan shifts. For Muslims, as for Jews, the day begins at sunset and ends at the next sunset.

For 2010 Ramadan starts on August 11 and ends on September 9.

As the Ramadan is based on the moon, the start of the Ramadan varies, depending on the physical location on the planet. The date above is for the US and Canada.
