Juggernaut: a massive inexorable force that seems to crush everything in its way.
Forbes is reporting that Oracle is suing Google for patent and copyright infringement - this may be David versus Goliath, part two, only that we do not know which party has the vaunted sling-shot or who is on the side of the angels. Oracle is alleging that Google infringed on its Java property used in its Android platform; of import to the pending case, is Oracle’s acquisition of Java with its recent purchase of Sun Microsystems.
Cases of this nature are normally drawn out to bleed cash from the less formidable opponent, but since Oracle is not that small, it might be able to hang with Google. These cases also have a tendency to settle, because the angels of compromise are invoked because of the profuse bleeding of cash to maintain such a suit. Yet, I am reminded that this is Google, whose worth and cash flow could rival any bellwether company out there.
As for the merits of the case, I am not privy to the specifics, but I can say that if one purchases a company, all purchased patents and copyrights property become that of the new owner, provided said copyrights were not in dispute or legally in limbo as to ownership.
Perhaps, we can glean the worth of the alleged infringements and copyrights in play because it is related to Java’s use, which is related to the smart phone platform – that ever increasing lucrative technological niche. We know this by Apple’s smart phone revenues and the inroads made by the growing popularity of the Droid X. The fact that there are new phones scheduled to come on line - Dell’s Streak - is a testament to the smart phone continued potential Midas-like revenue growth.
