Maj. Guy Hayes, a spokesman for the Alaska Air National Guard, said rescue crews were working to get at least three injured people away from the scene. He said it's possible there may be more survivors.
The plane crashed in a rugged stretch of Alaska. The crash left at least five people dead, but at least three people survived. The Federal Aviation Administration reports said that eight or nine people were on the plane.
The plane which crashed has been identified as a DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter. It crashed about 20 miles north of Dillingham, Alaska.
There were reports of bad weather at the time of the crash. This might have played a part in the occurrence.
Three rescue squadrons of the Alaska Air National Guard have been asked by the coordination center to respond to the scene.
On Tuesday morning, an Alaska Air National Guard HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter carrying rescue crews landed and gave medical support to the crash victims.
Former senator, Stevens, was a self-described "mean, miserable SOB," stood up for Alaska and for difficult fights on the Senate floor he wore his famous scowl and a necktie feature the raging Incredible Hulk.
"They sent me here, to stand up for the state of Alaska," he once said.
He was much loved by the people of Alaska and he has played a large part in shaping it into the state that it is today. He will be missed, as we can already tell by the thousands of tweets discussing his passing.
However, let us not end this report in sadness, rather, think about those that did survive. Their families will be glad to see them back home safe and sound and, I can almost guarantee that work will be done to improve the safety of flying with small aircraft through remote Alaska.
