BP announced today, that they started pumping cement into the well as part of the static kill procedure. As usual they add a disclaimer showing how they are not responsible and daddy is watching:
"All operations are being carried out with the guidance and approval of the National Incident Commander and other government officials".
Pumping cement into the well is part of the strategy to completely seal the well to make sure no further oil will be leaking into the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the well-cementing, two relief wells are being drilled that will ease the pressure to make sure the well does not blow through the mud and cement "cork".
It the pressure would continue to rise, the oil reservoir could behave like a shaken Champaigne bottle and just spit out the mud-cement cork and start to spill its oil again into the Gulf.
The so-called "static kill" procedure, which is being done from the top will be finished off with a "bottom kill". The "bottom kill" procedure is scheduled to be done later this month. Then heavy mud and cement will be injected sideways through two relief wells, which are currently being drilled. If all goes as planned, the reservoir sitting about 13,000 below the ocean floor, will be closed for good.
