USNews published the National University Rankings. Based on that Harvard Universityi Cambridge, MA, is the number one. Princeton University in Princeton, NJ scored the second place and Yale University in New Haven, CT finishes this years rankings on the third place.
It's not that easy to get accepted into Harvard. In 2010 only 7% from all applicants made it into the classroom. 19,411 students will enjoy a Harvard education this year. The Tuition and fees for one year in Harvard are $38,416. For Harvard it does not matter whether you are a local or not. Almost $40 k is not cheap, but far from the most expensive university.
Tuition varies a lot. You can get a full year of university education from $4,000 or for over $40,000. Some universities take practically everybody. For example, University of Colorado--Boulder, Boulder, CO accept 84% of all applications. It still costs $28,193 out of state and $8,511 if come from Colorado.
With an acceptance rate of 7% Harvard is the most selective school, followed by Stanford University with 8% and Princeton with 10%.
About 1,400 schools have been ranked by US News. Many schools offer offer a full range of undergraduate majors, master's, and doctoral degrees, while other are very specialized and only offer certain degrees.
If selecting a university there are many points that can not put in numbers. But certain things like tuition and acceptance rate can help finding the right college or university.
If you have the time and money, your best bet is to select two or three schools that you like and just take a trip to that city. Visit the school, talk to students and faculty members and then make up your mind.
Another point to keep in mind: tuition and fees are not the only expenses. You also have to calculate the cost for accommodations off campus or travel expenses.
