Not since Delilah’ betrayal of Sampson has an athlete tumbled so far from the glorious heights like what we are witnessing with golf great, Tiger Woods. It is rather obvious that Mr. Woods is suffering from his personal marital troubles and it is adversely affecting his once stellar golf game. The recent gulf tournament was a reminder of how far Tiger has fallen, placing second to last in a tournament where he normally walks the victory lane.
Tiger’s fall is almost Biblical where all aspects of his game are failing and there seems to be no improvement on the horizon. It is rather ironic, because Mr. Woods has the reputation – and it has been proven many a times - of being one of the strongest mental athletes out there. What makes Mr. Woods stands out is his dominance of a sports, where he almost doesn’t need anyone’s help to succeed – and that he has been doing until his recent marital woes.
Who would have thought that anything could have derailed the great Tiger Woods? Mr. Woods had the uncanny ability to focus and with the revelations of his partying ways, it must have taken a whole lot of concentration to keep winning and allegedly engaging in much womanizing. Some how, Tiger’s ability to concentrate and compartmentalize have abandoned him and it seems to be getting worse. Advertisers are nervous and we all have all seen the running joke on Saturday Night Live on how important Tiger is to Gulf, but then again, no man is an island, notwithstanding the poor ratings when Tiger isn’t in the thick of winning. Yet, with all of Mr. Woods’ difficulties, USA Today is reporting that the fans are still coming out in droves to see him at gulf tournaments.
I do not know what can bring Tiger back to his old winning ways, but the world is waiting for his spectacular play, which made a boring sport interesting. I recall some three years ago, my mother-in-law came to visit her granddaughter and she just happened to see Mr. Woods make a seemingly impossible shot. My mother-in-law, who doesn’t watch sports, thought that it was magic or something out of Hollywood. I had to explain to my surprised mother-in-law that Mr. Woods is capable of making these shots, explaining topography and the like.
