Should Millionaires Be Able To Claim Unemployment?

In the Bible, we are told that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a Needle than for a rich man to enter heaven – this passage came to mind when I read in Wallet Pop that there were millionaires who are claiming unemployment benefits. First, it must be noted that the criteria for qualifying for unemployment are rather easy to hurdle: you must have been employed and earned enough; you must have lost your job by no fault of your own; and you must be available to work, if a job becomes available. With that, one can see that it is easy to meet the unemployment criteria, but somehow it seems wrong that millionaires can claim unemployment, notwithstanding that they meet the criteria.

I am told that the state of Connecticut has the best weekly unemployment payout at a little over $500.00, but even that must be pittance to the average millionaire. Have their lifestyles become so difficult in this economy that they must resort to claiming unemployment? Can I chalk these unemployment claims by these privileged folks as unadulterated greed? By the way, has anyone inquired if these millionaires have also filed for food stamps? There is a need for a means test so that anyone who is deemed a millionaire is precluded from claiming unemployment.

There will be a legitimate legal challenge were we to have a means test for unemployment because these millionaires will be able to claim that the criteria for unemployment do not preclude them to receive the benefits, if the criteria are met. You would think that these millionaires would stay away from claiming unemployment benefits just out of sheer pride alone, and the fact that it might get out to the public and their peers that they are claiming these benefits for the regular working stiffs? I am waiting to hear that T. Boone Pickens and Warren Buffet are getting Social Security benefits.
