Despite the recession and former Hurricane Earl, more Americans are expected to hit the roads and airways this Labor Day weekend for vacations, short trips etc.
AAA projected a nearly 10 percent jump in holiday travel this year during this time over last year. Some 34.4 million Americans will visit friends or family during the five-day holiday period. They will travel at least 50 miles away from their homes, according to AAA spokeswoman, Nancy White.
Last year, only 31 million travelers vacationed over Labor day.
AAA travel agents are reporting that hotel, car and vacation package reservations are up about 10 percent as well. This is a good sign for travel destinations, as well as state parks and campgrounds.
"Consumer confidence is up this year. Last year it was really flat, in the toilet, so to speak," she said. "Consumer debt is down and there's a lot of pent-up demand. We've actually seen the holiday forecast trending up from Memorial Day, July 4th, and now for Labor Day," White told CNN.
It's also anticipated that travelers and vacationers will be spending about $50 more than they were last year. This might seem like not a lot, however, when you multiply it by 34.4 million, it's a very big amount.

The vast majority of travelers will be driving by car to their destinations. About 91 percent are doing this. It's cheaper for Americans who are on a budget to have a short road trip than it would be to purchase plane tickets and to stay at a hotel, rather than camping or something like that.
A lot of state parks are also reporting reservation increases at a lot of campground, proving the point about it being cheaper to camp that to stay at a hotel. Lots of people are choosing to use local campgrounds and RV parks for their Labor Day "getaway".
