Craigslist has now closed a controversial part of their website, Adult Services. This section has long been criticised by officails, and also by people in general.
The classified advertising website closed the adult services sectino just two weeks after 18 state attorney generals said that there weren't enough safeguards barring potentially illegal ads promoting prostitution and other illegal activites.
The section has been replaced on the website's homepage with a black highlight that says "censored" in bold white letters.
Officials have come under increasing pressure to ban the ads, this came as a result of the high-profile case dubbed "Craigslist Killer," Phillip Markoff.
The adult services section ran ads for personal massages and a night's company. There were also many cases of other, more illegal and illegitimate activites being advertised.
The 18 Attorney Generals suggested that the adult services section be shut down in a letter to Jim Buckmaster dated August 24.
"In our view the company should take immediate action to end the misery for the women and children who may be exploited and victimized by these ads," the letter read.
Buckmaster, Craigslist's CEO said in May that the ads run in the section were no worse than those run in alt-newspaper chain Village Voice Media. That doesn't justify it, however, so many people are glad that the section is finally shur down.

The "censored" bar does have a hint of defiance, however, hinting that the company didn't have a choice and that they are not happy with the ban. They could have just removed the section without comment.
