Apple will be ending their offer of free cases for all iPhone 4 owners by the end of September, they announced on Friday. After the 30th of September, iPhone owners who are still having problems with the antenna can call the AppleCare hotline to request a free case. However, it's not clear whether or not you will automatically receive one by calling.

During a hastily called press conference in July, Steve Jobs announced that everyone purchasing an iPhone 4 will be receiving a free case. He said that this would only be happening until the 30th, at which point they will "re-examine" and "decide whether to keep going or maybe we'll have a better idea," Jobs said.

It seems that their "better idea" is to not give out free cases anymore and that will be that. It could happen that later this year Apple will introduce a new iPhone 4 which will have a better antenna, however, that's not confirmed in any way.

Originally, when the problem was first announced, Apple said that the iPhone 4 wasn't the only phone out there which, when held the "wrong" way, lost reception. They announced that there were several other phones by companies like Nokia and RIM (makers of BlackBerry) had similar faults. These companies were not happy to be singled out, but, they were so that's that.

The reason that Apple is stopping the free case distribution is that the infamous "death grip" problem is "even smaller than we originally though," Apple announced.

Apple's full statement reads:

We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.

Despite the original wave of shock over the iPhone 4's antenna problem, sales have been steady for Apple. The Apple online store is still showing a three-week wait time for new orders.

There have been millions of iPhone 4s sold, making it one of Apple's most popular products is history.
