Grandparents day is a holiday that originated in the United States in 1978. It's now recognized by a number of countries on various days of the year. In the United States, it's always been celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day, making Grandparents Day 2010 fall on September 12.
Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, West Virginia has been recognized nationally by the United States Senate, in particular by the Senators Jennings Randolph, and Robert Byrd - also, she was recognized by President Jimmy Carter - as the founder of National Grandparents Day.
That means after all the confusion and sadness of yesterday, we can have a special holiday today to bring back our traditional happy spirit.
If you're a parent you might be wondering what to do for Grandparents Day 2010. Well, there are actually several things that you can do to make today fun and memorable for your parents, or your children's grandparents. You could start with having them over at your house. They could be with your children. If there is one thing that I know grandparents love, it's being with your children. It brings them back to the happy times when you were young.
They love hearing stories of your children's accomplishments and your brags about them. The delight in it because is shows that your children are becoming more and more like you.
To show that, there's a very old Welsh proverb that reads, "Perfect love sometimes does not come until the first grandchild."
See, when you're a parent you are often scrambling to ensure that your children are safe and happy. You don't often have time to actually sit back, relax, and enjoy the children themselves. Grandparents, on the other hand do.
