[/caption]Google unveiled it's new instant search. While the user is typing, Google starts to deliver search results. The new feature is "sold" as an improvement that gives faster results for the user.
If you take a closer look, you see that this is not so much about user experience. Yes, it may save a few seconds in some cases and yes, it might be nice and convenient for certain searches. searches. From all the data that is currently available, it looks more like a massive attack on SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
SEO is the effort to "improve" search results. Or, that is how many SEO professionals see it. Google has a different view: they hate it when somebody tries to mess with their search results and tries to "improve" them.
There are valid forms of SEO. Google even teaches webmasters how to improve traffic with Google Webmaster Tools. It shows web masters how to make their pages search engine friendly and give Google a fair chance to index pages properly and determine their content.
But hard core SEO goes beyond that. Here companies and individuals try to game the Google index and get a better ranking than their competition, often times with worthless content and irrelevant pages. Google does not like that and the Google engineers have been working since years to make it more and more difficult for shady SEO firms to game their system.
The most recent algorithm update, Google Caffeine, already cleared up a lot. Many SEO gurus were left in the dust, meaning on page 3 or 4 where they would enjoy number 1 rankings for years before. The Google Instant search is the icing on that cake. The instant search makes it nearly impossible to game the system, ate least not with state of the art technologies.
That means for the next few months at least we can enjoy Google results as they were intended by Google, without these annoying SEO-ed results that only lead to crappy sales pitches.
