Across the globe, excitement is building for this year's Perseids meteor showers. It takes place in August, every year. It is a beautiful meteor shower and is a wonderful sight to see.
There are about 50-80 meteors during an hour so you will have plenty of chances to see them. The Perseids are named after the Perseus constellation because they appear to come from there.
However, that's not the best place to look. You will want to look away from there to see them best. Early Friday, 13 August 2010 will probably be the best time to see them as that is when the Earth is turned toward the meteor shower.
This meteor shower will probably be the most spectacular thing you witness in the middle of the night this year. It is something that all star gazers look forward too.
Several sources are warning people, however, “don’t get meteor neck”. “While Mother Nature can put on a magnificent celestial display, meteor showers rarely approach anything on the scale of a July 4th fireworks show.”
This is true, however it is still a very nice show to see. Don't be discouraged by this warning message. You can still see plenty by lying down on the grass and just looking up to the stars.
Remember, the best way to view the meteor shower is in a dark location with little light. This will help you see into the darkness of the sky better. Also, bring a blanket to sit or lie on as you gaze upwards to the sky beyond.
