I do not know how the ratings are for AMC’s spy thriller Rubicon, but I can say that it is one intriguing show. The plot of the show “Rubicon” centers around an intelligence unit routinely working on the mundane areas of intelligence gathering and one of the main characters and star, James Badge Dale, saw a pattern in a cross word puzzle prompting him to tell his mentor and superior.
This superior reported the findings as if he were the one to have found the pattern – he is then apparently killed when the train he was traveling on swerved into an oncoming train. In the mean time, we see a wealthy man reading the financial pages and within those pages, he sees a four leaf clover. This four leaf clover is not a sign of good luck, but of death because we see the sheer panic on the man’s face and his subsequent death by his own hands.
We are left with the fact that those who killed the supervisor and the wealthy man have enough juice to lethally manipulate the public transport, including the rail system and by simply placing an innocuous four-leaf-clover in a newspaper, can compel someone to off them self. Like a puzzle, there are clues that were left for the young analyst to solve the mystery… and moreover, confirming the fact that he knew that he was in danger and paid the ultimate sacrifice. So far in “Rubicon,” the characters are not likely to involve in a lot of action like we see in James Bond because the show is more cerebral without being boring, yet compelling and must see cable TV.
I have no clue how “Rubicon” is going to end, but we know that there are at least four bad guys representing the three branches of our government and like the James Badge Dale character, we too are left trying to figure out what the fourth man represents. I know from Roman history that when Caesar crossed the Rubicon river, with his army, that there was no going back and Rome became a dictatorship. I can only speculate where “Rubicon” is going, but I love the ride so far. AMC has been on a roll with “Breaking Bad,” “Mad Men,” and now “Rubicon.”
