The talking heads were out in droves giving their take on why a Florida mother who had her five-year-old son arrested was wrong or right for doing so. The little boy was habitually playing with matches and lighting fires and no matter how he was verbally chastised by his mother, he continued - the mother then enlisted a friend from the Sheriff’s Department and had the officer pretend to officially arrest her son. I am siding with those who supported the mother because if that boy turned out to be a pyromaniac and an animal… those same critics of the mother’s tough action would be asking then - where were the parents.
It is a damn if you do, damn if you don’t scenario; but if placing that little boy under pretend arrest and doing so would put the fear of God in him – so be it! Lest we forget that the boy was engaged in match lighting and fires. It is better for that mother to try anything to prevent that boy from his anti social behavior that could have developed into something worse – of course this may still happen, but at least the mother is trying her best to prevent this outcome.
Why should the mother walk lock-step with her son down the road of perdition when she has the chance to be a buffer between such an outcome? I will not even describe what would have happened to yours truly had I engaged in such behavior in the Caribbean - my grandmother would have been deemed a child abuser.
