Mother of Somali Pirate Says President Obama Should Pardon Her Son and Grant Him Citizenship Too

As a boy growing up in the Caribbean, my grandma would use the term “having no shame box” for those who would say something outrageous, or moreover, engage in bad behavior. Sometimes grandma’s designation of “having no shame box” was warranted and sometimes it wasn’t; however, I am certain that she would have said it about the mother of one of the Somali Pirates… who said that President Obama should pardon her son, and, in addition, grant him citizenship. If your mouth is agape like that duck, voiced by Gilbert Gottfried, that you see in those Aflac insurance commercials, I understand; or if you are thinking that grandma would have been right in deeming that mother of  “having no shame box,” I understand too.

Just in case you are not privy to the story: here goes, last year, Somali Pirates attacked and captured a commercial ship being manned by Americans who were then boarded and taken hostage for ransom. President Obama tried to negotiate with the Pirates and eventually gave our Navy Seals the kill order, which resulted in the killing and the capture of many of the Pirates. One of the captured Pirates is now being held here for trial and the mother of this young man is the one petitioning President Obama to not only free her son, but to grant him citizenship too. Perhaps, I am not going to brand the pirate’s mother with grandma’s ‘no shame box’ mark, but I am going to chalk up the pirate’s mother pleadings to a mother’s maternal love for a child.

The Pirate’s mother musings are indeed made out of love because during the initial stage of the her son’s trial, she told the American prosecutors that her son was a minor who was forced into piracy by elders – However, upon further investigation, the Federal prosecutors found that the would-be-pirate was an adult… and eligible for trial. I could honestly understand and see how the pirate’s mother can petition President Obama for a pardon for her son, but citizenship too – that is what my Jewish brothers would call chutzpah. I am going out on a limb and guessing that President Obama will disappoint the Somali pirate’s mother.
