It is always a treat to see those who have place their lives on the line in the service of their country. Veterans from another era, like my father, didn’t receive the accolades that are obvious by the express and tacit welcome that New Yorkers have shown the members of our armed forces.  We see the awe in the eyes of many… perhaps never being to the big city and the constant flashes from cameras; we also witness the businesses catering to the heroes… and moreover, a respite from the cynical nature known to be part of the New York culture.

Fleet Week is an occasion for those of us who live in New York to enjoy the better angels of our nature… basking in the fleeting aberration. In addition, all the dignitaries come out to honor the soldiers - from the mayor to the local celebrities. The police are even more agreeable during this time… stepping back and recognizing that this week is special… with the public benefiting from the authorities leniency. To all the shows on Broadway, the taxi cabs, and the other businesses that cater to the Armed Forces – Thank You! I pray for the soldiers’ safety as they enjoy the Apple and like all New Yorkers, I thank them for their service.
