Barrack Obama gave a Presidential Press Conference on the Deepwater BP Oil Spill during which he made clear that the government is in charge of the oil spill. British Petroleum might be executing some actions, but nothing happens without being first approved by a member of Obama's staff.
As Mr. Obama expressed it: "BP oil spill -– a catastrophe that is causing tremendous hardship in the Gulf Coast".
"The American people should know that from the moment this disaster began, the federal government has been in charge of the response effort. As far as I’m concerned, BP is responsible for this horrific disaster, and we will hold them fully accountable on behalf of the United States as well as the people and communities victimized by this tragedy."
"But make no mistake: BP is operating at our direction. Every key decision and action they take must be approved by us in advance. I’ve designated Admiral Thad Allen -– who has nearly four decades of experience responding to such disasters -– as the National Incident Commander, and if he orders BP to do something to respond to this disaster, they are legally bound to do it. So, for example, when they said they would drill one relief well to stem this leak we demanded a backup and ordered them to drill two. And they are in the process of drilling two."
BP messed up the operation in the first place. Now they are degraded to order takers, which is the right thing for this situation.
There is a team of scientists and engineers working on resolving the situation. The team is lead by Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Stephen Chu. And part of the team are experts who’ve actually dealt with oil spills in the past.
The Coast Guard is helping to resolve the situation and there are more than 1,300 vessels assisting in the containment and cleanup efforts of the oil spill.
The president also suggests to visit the beaches of the Gulf Coast. They are clean, safe and open to the public, except three beaches in Louisiana. All other beaches in Louisiana and the Gulf's beaches are open. To go to Louisiana for your vacation would actually help. As terrible the situation might seem, there is always something that can be done.
Develop Clean, Renewable Sources of Energy
Mr Obama said: "Let me make one final point. More than anything else, this economic and environmental tragedy –- and it’s a tragedy -– underscores the urgent need for this nation to develop clean, renewable sources of energy. Doing so will not only reduce threats to our environment, it will create a new, homegrown, American industry that can lead to countless new businesses and new jobs."
Mr Obama stated also: "It’s time to accelerate the competition with countries like China, who have already realized the future lies in renewable energy."
"Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?"
That were the words of Obama's daughter Malia. The knocked on daddy's bathroom door and peeked in her her head asking: “Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?”
So, here is how Barack Obama concluded his briefing:
"In the meantime, my job is to get this fixed. And in case anybody wonders -- in any of your reporting, in case you were wondering who’s responsible, I take responsibility. It is my job to make sure that everything is done to shut this down. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen right away or the way I’d like it to happen. It doesn’t mean that we’re not going to make mistakes. But there shouldn’t be any confusion here: The federal government is fully engaged, and I’m fully engaged."
