Now I must confess that I am a Johnny Come Lately to the “Dancing With The Stars” phenomenon, and the truth is that I only watch it now and then when one of the football stars is part of the cast. I was also curious to watch because I wanted to know what it was about the show that was matching or beating the juggernaut American Idol in the ratings. Like many, I watched last night season finale and saw the two contestants, Nicole Scherzinger, the supposed amateur, paired with the professional, Derek Hough.

This pairing objectively deserved to win and they did… but the truth is I was rooting for Erin Andrews because I knew her from watching sports and I am more impressed with those who do not have any professional dancing in his or her resume - someone like the winner, Nicole, who is the leader singer of a band (The Pussy Cat Dolls), to me has an advantage from all those contestants who have no dancing in their background.

I enjoyed the dancing and the winners, as I’ve said, were deserving of the award, but my only critique is that dancers, certain performers, and professional skaters should be judged by more exacting standards because they are accustomed to the routines associated with professional dancing. That is why it is so impressive when football players or the like does well or why there is such empathy for those like a Kate Gosselin who has no dancing in her past.

Permit me to digress a little to say to the producers of American Idol that this “Dancing With The Stars” phenomenon is now and in the future will continue to be a formidable opponent, especially now that "American Idol" was gutted with the departure of Simon Cowell.
