It was only months ago when the news were that Kim Jong-il, was gravely ill; Jesus must have put in an appearance in North Korea because the great leader is not only well, but is saber rattling and apparently had ordered the sinking of South Korean ship killing over forty people.
Upon an investigation by the West, the sunken ship was lifted and the evidence showed that the spent missile shell casing was indeed from North Korea. Now the issue is how the United Nations is going to punish North Korea for the whole sale murder of South Korean citizens?
I am almost certain that North Korea calculated this move before it was undertaken; the question is to what end. It could be something as simple as being the region’s bully; and a country as a bully is no different than those we grew with from our schools. Bullies take what belong to others because they could and they know that there will be no consequences when they forcefully take or beat up on someone.
Are we going to open another front on the 38th Parallel over the killing of those South Korean citizens - No! But how do we deter North Korea from doing so again? That is the million dollar question; and I suppose this is why Secretary State Clinton has the big title and the prestige that goes along with that position. On the school playgrounds, the bullies only stop their bullying because of threats or someone bigger out bullying them.
Kim Jong-il, the leader of North Korea, knew that even murdering South Koreans would mean his only getting a slap on the wrists. Mind you, I am not saying these killings were done out of the North’s lust for blood, but I would say that the move to sink the ship was calculated to influence the crippling sanctions and have them lifted or to receive incentives from the West.
I could tell the South to retaliate, but I am not certain the war would be limited to conventional weapons, and moreover, be confined to the Korean Peninsula. Such is the paralysis of law abiding countries when dictators have nuclear bombs; I hope the world knows and extrapolates from what has happened in South Korea and what we will be facing in the future… as more and more of these rogue countries (Iran) get nuclear weapons.
