Most of us have seen the mug shot, and are privy to the famous drunken rant by Oscar winner Mel Gibson, which involved all sorts of racist epithets about the Jews . But, apparently, Mr. Gibson hasn’t learned, and now has moved on to berating African Americans.

This time, according to TMZ, Mr. Gibson was allegedly taped by his estranged Russian girlfriend and mother of his eight-month old child, spewing hatred against African Americans by referring to them by the N-word.

When Mr. Gibson was caught using racist slurs against the Jews, he apologized and entered anger management…but it is obvious the treatment didn’t take.Perhaps, Mr. Gibson’s feelings towards minorities are exactly what they are, and no anger management - nor his enrollment in racial sensitivity classes - can change what is inherent in him.

I cannot gauge whether Mr. Gibson’s acting career was negatively affected by his initial racist rant because, at the time, he was focusing more on directing.

Since the rant about the Jews, and now the one against African Americans, Mr. Gibson has only starred in one movie, which did not do well in the box office. This lack of box office success may have nothing to do with Mr. Gibson’s racist rants, but more to do with the fact that his core audience is older.

With Mr. Gibson’s age (and his perceived growing rep for being a racist, in tandem),  it might put the nail into his acting career. It could also be that Mr. Gibson’s movies are not what the audience wants to see.

Incidentally, no one has asked Danny Glover, Mr. Gibson’s African American co-star in the “Lethal Weapons” series, his take on Gibson’s apparently racist feelings towards blacks. The friendship and camaraderie in those  movies seem so genuine – but that’s why it is called acting.

  1. Seriously, the byline is wondering if Mad Max is a racist, how does one not comment sarcastically?

I am just too dumbfounded to come out with a worthy quip. Maybe I can come up with a more inane byline.

Ohh for the record. Mel is a racist. But that doesn't make him a bad guy. He can find the diamond in the rough of an non-Catholic of color.

  2. I'm not sure I get why so many folks are making such a fuss over Mel Gibson. He is just a fantastic director and we should be grateful he has created such interesting movies.

  3. Owensboro - Should we be grateful that he knocked out his girlfriend's two front teeth, punching his two-month-old daughter in the process, then admitted to it and said she "deserved it"? What about when he waved the gun in her face, and threatened to kill Oksana while she held their baby? No, you're right, the real issue here is his work on Passion of the Christ.
