Today, a man named James Lee held three people hostage in the headquarters of the Discovery Channel in Silver Spring, Maryland. These hostages were rescued after police shot and killed the man who was holding them, according to officials.

The hostages were not harmed, Police Chief J. Thomas Manger of the Montgomery County Police Department said.

The suspect was identified by a law enforcement official as James Lee. The suspect had been in communication with authorities before he was shot.

Lee was linked to a manifesto that was posted on the internet, according to CNN. The manifesto repeatedly refers to humans as "filth" and it demands that the Discovery Channel "stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants."

During the situation, Police Captain Paul Starks said that Lee was making some demands and that the man had "concerns" about the Discovery Corporation.

At One Discovery Place, the channel's headquarters, a person called the police at about 1 PM to report a man with a gun and possible explosives. The area was then evacuated. More than 1,900 employees of the building were evacuated, however, a "few" apparently stayed on the upper floors during the standoff.

The writer of the online manifesto blasts immigration, farming, weapons of mass destruction, automotive pollution, "and the whole blasted human economy."

The manifesto concluded with the sentence, "These are the demands and sayings of Lee."

In 2008, Aaron Morrissey, the editor in chief of the web publication DCist said he came across James Lee's anti-Discovery Channel manifesto. This was when Lee was planning on holding a protest against the channel.

About a month later, Lee was arrested near the building on littering and disorderly conduct charges, Morrissey said. The littering charge stemmed from Lee's throwing money in to the air in protest.

The situation is finally under control and everybody is safe and sound. It's a good thing that officials acted so quickly and got the hostages out of harms way.

FBI and ATF agents also responded to the scene, so we can see that our safety officials really want to keep citizens out of harms way and that they do all they can do and most of the time they succeed.
