Through the night, Hurricane Earl has weakened dramatically and become a category 1 hurricane. Earl currently has 85 mile per hour winds. Weakening is forecast for today, however, Earl is expected to remain a large hurricane as it approaches New England.
A lot of warnings and watches changed or disappeared. The hurricane warning for North Carolina has been discontinued, and replaced by a tropical storm warning north of Ocracoke. The tropical storm warning area for Massachusetts has been reduced, and the tropical storm watch for western Long Island and the coast of Connecticut west of New Haven has been discontinued.
Hurricane Earl's center is forecast to move away from the North Carolina Outer Banks and to approach southeastern New England tonight.
Tropical storm Fiona is weakening as the storm heads north over colder water. Fiona's wind speed is about 45 miles per hour. Fiona is forecast to weaken further and become a tropical depression by late Saturday.
There is a 40% chance of another tropical cyclone forming in the area between Africa and South America, and a 20% chance of tropical cyclone formation on the western coast of Africa.
It could happen that by the end of today we have two more tropical cyclones on our hands.

In the Pacific, we have a new tropical depression that formed, Tropical Depression Ten-E. With winds of 35 miles per hour, only a small increase in organization would bring the cyclone up to tropical storm intensity. This storm is located about 205 miles south of the southern tip of Baja California.
