Our Attorney General (AG), Eric Holder, has had a change of heart concerning his take on how to treat terrorists when they are captured. The far left is in a tizzy over this change because the AG has asked the Congress to assist him in enacting legislation to extend how long we are allowed to hold someone suspected of terrorism…especially when there is evidence that the plots to maim and kill are not fully known. In legal parlance, this change is being compelled by the “Public Safety Exception” and it must be noted that this position also has the support of the new nominee for the Supreme Court, Elena Kagan-she said this much during her confirmation hearings for Solicitor General.

We all should be counting our blessings and not looking the prudent, practical pending legislation in the proverbial mouth; too many times in the past, we have operated on the theory of the law governing this grave issue of terrorism and not on the practical aspects of how the law affected our lives. With the advent of ‘dirty bombs,’ we have no time for the subtleties of the law in theory…overly waxing poetic about how these would-be mass murderers, who, incidentally, often are not citizens, are treated in our judicial system. If we have to choose between holding a terrorist for an extended time than what is currently allotted in our laws-so be it! I prefer this “tweaking” of the law than to have dead and mangled bodies of innocent women and children in our streets or our malls.

There are those who will be disappointed with the AG’s change on this issue; many on the left flank will sound the death knell for “Due Process,” but our revered Constitution is not suicidal…salivating and yearning to drink the dangerous and impractical kool-aid from those on the far left. Others that are cynical will also opined that said change was borne out of polling, which showed that the president was taking a shellacking on this issue and…coupled with the mid-term elections on the near horizons, was the reason why the Obama Administration was nipping this issue in the bud before the Republican add it to their growing arsenal.

I personally do not care what was the impetus, which compelled the Attorney General to seek an assist from the legislators for the changing of this particular law, which again, would basically be asking for extra time to investigate terrorist plots in their entirety. I am simply hoping that this life-saving, practical latitude being asked of our Constitution, passes muster and that it is codified to assist the authorities in gleaning evidence to prevent whole-sale slaughter. This is why it is aptly called “The Public Safety Exception.” President Bush took a beating even when he was genuinely trying to save lives; we should not make that same mistake with President Obama because bin Laden and his ilk do not care about black or white, Democrats or Republicans-They see us all as Apostates.
