The United Arab Emirates' collection of world architectural records has earned another piece. The have designed a new building to construct, the Capital Gate building in the desert kingdom's capital, Abu Dhabi has been certified by Guinness World Records as the "World's Furthest Leaning Man-Made Tower."
This new building leans nearly five time farther than the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. The 35-story Abu Dhabi building has an 18-degree slope. This is an enormous slope compared to the four degrees of the freestanding bell tower in Italy.
There are some major differences between the two buildings.
1. The Capital Gate building's lean is not a mistake. Rather, it has been deliberately engineered to slant, whereas the Leaning Tower of Pisa was quite an accident.
2. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a symbol of classic architecture. The new Capital Gate building shows distinct modernism in its design.
How, might you ask, does this tower lean? Well, the floor plates are stacked vertically up to the 12th floor, after which they are staggered over each other by 300 mm to 1,400 mm. This is what gives the tower its lean the owners said.
"It is a signature building which speaks to the foresight of the emirate," said Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon al Nahyan, the chairman of the building's owner, Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company.
The building will be ready for occupancy at the end of this year. It is also featured in a new National Geographic documentary that is called "Megastructures."
Besides Capital Gate’s gravity-defying lean and its pre-cambered core, the tower has several other elements that enhance its reputation as one of the world’s most distinctive projects:
Each room is different as is each pane of façade glass and every interior angle, Capital Gate’s double-glazed façade achieves greater energy efficiency with waste air being pre-cooled between the inner and outer façades, before being expelled. The distinctive stainless steel ‘splash’ that descends from the 19th floor, is a design element and a shading device that eliminates over 30 percent of the sun’s heat before it reaches the building. The splash also twists around the building towards the south to shield the tower as much as possible from direct sunlight. Capital Gate’s 19th storey outdoor swimming pool has an unrivaled panoramic view.
Earlier, in January Dubai -- one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates -- unveiled the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa. This building costed more than $1.5 billion to build and is 160 stories with a height of more than 800 meters (2,625 ft).
The United Arab Emirates continues to be the world's architectural leader and only time will tell what they will unveil next.
